CINCINNATI OPERA EDUCATION ANNOUNCES 2011-2012 TOURING PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS
CINCINNATI—Cincinnati Opera is pleased to announce its roster of 2011-2012 Touring Programs for schools. Every year, Cincinnati Opera Education provides operatic experiences for school-aged audiences through its award-winning Touring Program. The Resident Ensemble performs a variety of fully-staged musical programs for thousands of students in the tri-state area annually. Each show is intended to enhance the existing school academic and artistic curriculum, and speaks directly to students in an engaging, entertaining way. A study guide including cross-curricular activities that refer to state and national standards accompanies performances. Target audiences are students in grades PreK-12.

Classroom Opera-tunities │ October 2011–May 2012
Local teaching artists will provide services for customizable programs, including residencies, master classes, and workshops.
Opera in a Box: A highly interactive program for budding opera lovers, Opera in a Box artists use opera’s greatest hits, context clues, props, and body language to dispel the myth that opera is difficult to understand. Recommended for grades K–4.

Poetic Heroes: Students explore heroes in their lives and, through poetic devices and music composition, create songs telling the tale of everyday heroes. This program is a 6-week residency. Recommended for grades 4–6.

Opera from the Bottom Up: Starting with an existing story, participants determine every aspect of the production as if they are an opera company. This 12-week residency is great for teaching across the curriculum. Recommended for grades K–6.

Opera Redux: Porgy and Bess │ January 30–February 19, 2012
It’s summertime on Catfish Row, and Bess is torn; she loves the sweet, caring Porgy, but her drug addiction keeps pulling her back to the abusive Crown. The drama unfolds with well-known tunes in this hour-long version of George Gershwin’s opera, set in 1930s Charleston, South Carolina. Recommended for grades 7–12 and adults.

Little Red Riding Hood │ April 30–May 18, 2012
A lively Little Red and a comical wolf join forces to share playful lessons on the importance of personal safety, proper diet, and good health. Our delightful adaptation of the classic Grimm Brothers fairy tale is sure to help keep students on the right path. Recommended for grades PreK–3 and families.

Cincinnati Opera’s 2012 Summer Festival will take place June 14 through July 29 and features a double bill of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata.
