Moby-Dick Live Screening & Discussion

Northern Kentucky University will host a live screening of the PBS Great Performances broadcast of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick opera on Friday, Nov. 1, at 9 p.m., in the Griffin Hall George and Ellen Rieveschl Digitorium.

The opera received rave reviews at its world premiere at the Dallas Opera in 2010 and at subsequent productions in Australia, Canada, San Diego and San Francisco. Cincinnati Opera will produce Heggie and Scheer’s Moby-Dick in 2016.

Robert K. Wallace, regents professor of English at NKU, attended the world premiere. His book, titled Heggie and Scheer’s Moby-Dick, was published by University of North Texas Press earlier this year. Opera Today has called Dr. Wallace’s book “the perfect companion volume when Moby-Dick is eventually issued on DVD or Blu-ray.” The book features interviews with the composer, librettist, and members of the cast and creative team.

The Nov. 1 screening will be preceded by a reception and book signing at 8 p.m. At 8:40 p.m., The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera, Evans Mirageas, will join Wallace in presenting brief remarks about the Moby-Dick opera. The screening is co-sponsored by CET, Cincinnati Opera, and the NKU Office of the Provost; it will be the culmination of a week-long celebration of National Opera Week in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The screening is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required by Oct. 28 to specialevents@nku.edu. For further information contact Dr. Wallace at wallacer@nku.edu or Cincinnati Opera at kholterhoff@cincinnatiopera.org.
