Eugene Onegin Composed by P.I. Tchaikovsky
July 14 & 16 | 7:30 p.m.
It’s all in the timing.
THE STORY She was young, pretty, and absolutely smitten. So, she wrote him a letter confessing her love. He read it and dismissed her entirely, imploring her to “show some restraint.” Years later, they met again. This time, the roles were reversed.
THE OPERA In the same year Cincinnati’s Music Hall was finished, Russian composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky completed a new work called Eugene Onegin (oh-NYAY-ghin). Based on a beloved novel by Alexander Pushkin, Tchaikovsky’s ravishing opera is as appealing and melodic as his other masterpieces for the stage, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
THE CAST Metropolitan Opera star baritone Nathan Gunn makes his Cincinnati Opera debut in the title role, offering his first-ever performances as the Russian aristocrat. Soprano Tatiana Monogarova sings the role of Tatyana, a role she has performed in Paris, Milan and, in spring 2011, at her native Moscow’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
