Barely a decade separates the venerable Verdi's Otello (1887) from the newcomer Puccini's La Bohème (1896): a decade that gave us Rimsky-Korsakov, Strauss, and Debussy; Ibsen, Wilde, and Shaw; the cinema, the phonograph, and wireless telegraphy; the Impressionists, Art Nouveau, and Freud. Through listening and discussion, attendees will discover how both Otello and La Bohème sum up 19th-century Italian opera while pointing toward the future and reflecting modern trends.
