From her front steps she could see the vast Pacific Ocean. Each morning she would rise, dress, and step outside to gaze off into the horizon. Would this be the day? The picture in her mind had remained crystal clear–a plume of smoke rising in the distance, the sound of the ship's horn, then his handsome military uniform. Surely it couldn't be long now.
Puccini's 1904 Madame Butterfly–with its soaring melodies, exotic locale, and heartrending tragedy–is one of the most popular operas ever written. And we're pleased to present the opera in Michael Yeargan and Mark Lamos's acclaimed production from New York City Opera.
Soprano Shu-Ying Li makes her Cincinnati Opera debut as the Japanese bride, Cio-Cio-San. Li brings her "convincing and vocally expressive" (The New York Times) portrayal of Cio-Cio-San to her Cincinnati Opera debut, a role she recently sang to acclaim with New York City Opera. Ms. Li is quickly becoming one of the most sought after interpreters of Puccini's Cio-Cio-San in North America. Tenor Frank Lopardo, "one of the finest lyric tenors of our day," (Grandi-tenori.com) returns to Cincinnati after his winning performance in our 2005 Rigoletto to sing Pinkerton.
Please note: Evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee performance will begin at 3:00 p.m.
