THE STORY A poor but beautiful girl discovers she can transform herself into a flowering tree, catching the eye of a young prince. They soon marry, but the prince’s sister, inflamed with jealousy, drives the couple apart. The remorseful prince must traverse the country to find his bride and win back her heart.
THE OPERA Based on a tale from southern India and praised as “alive with innocence and magic” (New York Times), A Flowering Tree is the latest opera from one of the most celebrated composers of our time, John Adams. Our production will combine powerful music with inventive stagecraft to convey this touching love story.
THE CAST We are proud to present the cast who performed at the opera’s 2006 premiere. Soprano Jessica Rivera, who last appeared with Cincinnati Opera in Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar (2009), sings the title role. Russell Thomas is her prince, and Eric Owens, a recent sensation in the Met’s Das Rheingold, is the Storyteller.
